The Master鈥檚 programme in archaeological practice is designed to provide you with advanced practice training based on rigorous theory in archaeology. The M.A. is tailored to make extensive use of archaeological sites and monuments in Malta, one of the richest archaeological landscapes in the Mediterranean. You will be able to address, formulate, and research archaeological problems as well as be trained to tackle and resolve issues involving archaeological resources at risk. This programme gears you towards professional relevance in the field鈥攖o prepare professional reports, investigate sites, and to consider legislation and regulations when consulting stakeholders. This M.A. includes a mandatory four-week summer placement.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a first cycle degree in Archaeology, obtained with a Second Class Honours or Category II classification, provided that applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class Honours or Category III shall satisfy the Board through an interview that they are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or a degree from this or from other University, which the Board considers as comparable.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts in Archaeological Practice - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

  • Address, formulate, and research archaeological problems through set tasks
  • Evaluate and demonstrate a variety of methods for investigating archaeological resources while respecting the non-renewable nature of the resources
  • Design and carry out surveys of archaeological features in a select stretch of landscape
  • Prepare a professional Environment Impact Assessment
  • Design and prepare a catalogue of archaeological artefacts, including drawn sketches and photography
  • Demonstrate critical judgement in consulting stakeholders, regulatory bodies, operating agencies, researchers, and the community

This course also provides you with an ideal gateway to MPhil/PhD research oriented towards applications of archaeological concepts and strategies.
